See more owls than ever before including NEW species, plus Owl Talks, night time Owl Prowls, Owl Brunch and Owl-o-ween events!


PITTSBURGH (October 4, 2017) -- With their silent flight, magnificent glowing eyes, and powerful talons, owls are among the most majestic and memorable species of birds in the world, yet also one of the most elusive. 

This fall, visitors to the National Aviary will have the opportunity to see more owls than ever before while experiencing special events and programming that highlights the traits that all owl species share, and the characteristics unique to each species.

Owls on Exhibit

October 1 through Spring 2018

NEW species on exhibit include the Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, White-faced Scops Owl, and Barred Owl.  The National Aviary’s Snowy Owl returns with the arrival of cooler weather, while small but spunky Burrowing Owls can be seen on exhibit, as well as in daily free-flight bird shows. 

Daily Owl Talks

12:30 a.m. daily

Included with admission.

Learn about these exceptional birds, their adaptations and the unique traits that all owl species share, including their adept hunting abilities, the exaggerated way they turn their heads, their impeccable hearing and more.

Owl Prowls with Ornithologist Bob Mulvihill

7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

$10 per person; preregistration required.

·         Frick Environmental Center (Frick Park): November 1

Join National Aviary ornithologist, Bob Mulvihill for a guided, after-dark nature walk to look and listen for owls in our local parks. Each Owl Prowl will begin with an appearance by one of the National Aviary’s owl ambassadors, allowing participants the opportunity to see an owl up close and take pictures. Enjoy a fascinating discussion about owls and their unique adaptations, as well as an introduction to the species of owls that can be found in the area. Bob will bring along a call device to coax owls closer to the group – bring a flashlight and wear good walking shoes for this exciting night-time event.   Registration is required; space is limited. Owl Brunch

·         Sunday, October 15

·         Two Seatings: 10:30 am and 12:30 pm

·         $37 (non-members adult), $19.50 (non-member child 4-10); $32 (member adult) $17 (member child 4-10 ); Children 3 and under are Free

·         Call 412-258-9445 to register. Space is limited; reservations required. Tickets are transferrable but not refundable.

Enjoy a delicious brunch delectably prepared by Atria's, with the National Aviary’s most majestic residents. Guests will dine in the heated Rose Garden tent and enjoy special visits from extraordinary owls. Cost includes admission to the National Aviary.


Saturday, October 21 and 28

Whooo’s ready for Owl-o-Ween?  Visit the National Aviary’s annual harvest festival! Wear your costume and come prepared for candy, crafts, and more. Enjoy close encounters and perfect photo opportunities with raptors, owls and other creatures of the night.

Private Owl Encounters

Daily at 3 pm

$75 per person

Interaction with guests provides valuable enrichment for our birds.  When guests book a private encounter, they have the opportunity to experience a remarkable up-close look at one of the National Aviary’s owl species, including Eastern Screech Owl, Eurasian Eagle Owl or Spectacled Owl.  Learn about these incredible hunters, take photos, dissect an owl pellet, and discover ways to protect these birds and their habitats.  You will also have the opportunity to hold a bird on glove. The National Aviary is open 7 days/week, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Ticket pricing: Adults $15; Children (ages 2-12) $14; Seniors (60+) $14; Under age 2 free.
