Special Events

A National Aviary Special Event Volunteer contributes to the Aviary by supporting singular events both on weekends and evenings which require little to no training. These events frequently include staffing adult-only evening events or weekend all-ages events sharing and inspiring a respect of nature through an appreciation of birds. Night in the Tropics, Owl-O-Ween, Brushes and Birds, Girls Scouts Take Flight, Holiday Lights and Late Nights are all examples of such events.

This position is ongoing. 

Days needed: Mainly weekends and evenings

Number of hours required: 2-4 hours per event
Specific time/ shift required: Varying hours revolving around events. Generally 11:00 am – 3:00 pm for weekend events or 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm evening events

Volunteer duties:

  • Serve as an ambassador for the National Aviary.
  • Help children with crafts
  • Greet and direct guests
  • Check coats
  • Bus tables
  • Register participants, etc.
  • Assist with photo opportunities
  • Set up décor
  • Help vendors load in supplies on carts


  • Submit an online application.
  • Enjoy engaging with people
  • Have a clear criminal background check and child abuse history.
  • Submit for FBI fingerprinting or sign waiver if eligible.
  • Have reliable and convenient internet access.
  • Attend new volunteer orientation
  • Commit to a minimum of 15 hours of service per year.
  • Commit to selecting schedule at least one month in advance
