National Zookeeper Week

7/9/2014

The National Aviary is celebrating National Zookeeper Week, July 19th through July 26th.  Join us as we recognize all the great work our keepers do to help conserve wild animals and support the more than 500 birds that call the National Aviary home.

During the week, our keepers will be the stars of their very own show! Every day, join us in Condor Court at 12:00pm for “Meet a Keeper.” Let these dedicated professionals tell you what it takes to be a keeper and why they love their jobs.

Also this week, future zookeepers can enter the “Why I Want to Be a Zookeeper” Contest.

Participants must:

  • Be between 8-18 years of age.
  • Submit a written paragraph (200 words or less) OR a video essay (2 min or less) describing why they want to be a zookeeper.

The winning entry will receive a behind the scenes tour with our avian keepers.

Please join us in thanking and recognizing all the zookeepers here at the National Aviary and across the United States!

Quotes from our keepers:

“Some people have a bad day when their boss yells at them. I have a bad day when one of the animals I care for is ill or hurt.”-Dave Miller

“I always knew I wanted to work with animals, but when I started working with sea lions during my first zoo internship, seeing that moment when it clicks for the animal and they know what you are asking them to do, it was amazing.  Since that moment I have been hooked on zoo keeping and training for life”. -Jenny Walsh
