Beaks & Branches with Tree Pittsburgh

Sat., April 11 | 11 am - 1 pm
Free to attend

If you are strolling in Allegheny Commons Park on Saturday, stop by this event!

Tree Pittsburgh, the National Aviary, and the Pittsburgh Park Rangers are co-hosting a tree planting and education day in Allegheny Commons.

Second-grade students from seven ONE Northside schools and their families have been invited to spend a morning in Allegheny Commons learning about birds, observing their environment, and planting trees to provide birds with food and habitat.

Tree Pittsburgh will plant 27 trees of varying sizes. All trees have been selected for their support of the biodiversity of birds. Species include serviceberry, winter king hawthorn, black gum, redbud, birch, black cherry, and chokecherry.

National Aviary staff will host tabletop educational activities about how birds need trees to survive and thrive. Students and their families can participate in a “Build a Nest” challenge, an activity about bird-friendly backyards, and an activity exploring different types of bird beaks.

Pittsburgh Park Rangers will lead families on a walk through Allegheny Commons. On their walk, they will identify and observe different bird habitats and the trees that support birds in the park.

This project is made possible thanks to the financial support of the Pennsylvania Zoo Council.

Weather Notice: In the event of inclement weather, Beaks & Branches will be canceled. Let's hope for sunshine!
