The Striped Skunk sisters have officially been monikered, and it’s a direct result of public engagement!
The entire two-round naming contest highlighted just how much people truly care about the National Aviary: raising more $2,500 in 2.5 weeks, and increasing September Guest and Member attendance at the Aviary by 40% compared to past years.
Sister A: Petunia
The more outgoing sibling; her stripes curve slightly and points towards her left nostril!
Sister B: Daisy
The sibling who hangs back and watches first; she has a narrower facial stripe and lighter fur on her chest.
Both flower names pair nicely with their mom, Lily, an Ambassador at the Cincinnati Zoo!
The Skunk Painting Encounter winners, randomly chosen from those who originally suggested either Petunia, Daisy, or both, will be contacted via email by a member of the National Aviary’s Philanthropy staff within the next two weeks!
Visitors have multiple opportunities to meet the sisters:
Delve deeper into the Striped Skunks fascinating lifestyle and the importance of biodiversity in shared ecosystems alongside one of our NEW skunk sisters, a second adorable Animal Ambassador, and an Aviary expert during a daily talk, Forest Friends, included with General Admission or Membership!
Or, add-on a Skunk Painting Encounter (offered daily except Tuesdays) and watch as the other sister scampers across a canvas (which YOU take home!), leaving adorable pawprints with animal-safe paint. PLUS, feed her a few of her favorite treats while learning even more fun facts about this scent-sational cute species.
