A rare bird at the National Aviary on Pittsburgh’s North Side is creating a major buzz in the northeast.

The Aviary recently welcomed Dariéna, a one-year-old female Harpy Eagle from the Miami Zoo, and she is the only known Harpy Eagle in the entire Northeast, weighing around 17 to 20 pounds.

Cathy Schlott is the Director of Animal Programs and Experiences at the National Aviary.

She tells the Big K morning Show that Dariéna is a very impressive bird:

“They can be up to 40-inches tall, so they’re very large eagles and they’re just very impressive with their crest and how they look and it’s also impressive that they have large feet and talons to be able to eat arboreal mammals in the rainforest and they have talons that are like four to five inches long, that’s like the size of a grizzly bear’s talons,” said Schlott.

She says Dariéna is drawing massive crowds as part of the Aviary’s Remarkable Raptors summer programming.
