National Aviary kicks off winter season with new talks, experiences during ‘Rainforest Retreat’

 

 

 

PITTSBURGH — The National Aviary’s winter season is bringing a “Rainforest Retreat” feature for guests to enjoy.

The Rainforest Retreat experience includes daily talks and new activities.

Tropical, woodland and coastal birds will be featured.

A typical day of education will include:

  • Rainforest Melodies Talk (11:30 a.m.) – showcases the sounds of the rainforest
  • Mining Marvels Experts Talk (12:30 p.m.) – discusses warnings that stem from canary’s call
  • Fabulous Flamingos Expert Talk (2:30 p.m.) – explores the vocalizations of pink flamingoes
  • Tweet that Tune (3:00 p.m.) – visitors have a chance to guess the signature calls of different birds
 

New experiences include opportunities to get close to Spotted Whistling-Ducks and Victoria Crowned Pigeon families when feedings take place from 11:30 a.m. through 1:30 p.m.

During feedings from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., guests can meet Albert and Elizabeth, a pair of Blue-billed Curassows.

The African Penguins colony will dine at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The aviary will share details about work done to protect the species.

Guests can look into add-on experiences that will allow them to get closer to Rainbow Lorikeets. owls, sloths. falcons, or penguins with exclusive “Animal Encounters.”

“2025 is sure to be an exciting year for National Aviary guests!” says Cathy Schlott, director of animal programs and experiences. “In addition to the groundbreaking FOUR daily activities included with general admission, we are excited to announce the debut of a BRAND NEW live immersive bird show later this spring, that will take guests on an international trek (without needing a flight of your own!), in addition to TWO new special events designed for ages 21 and up, and the arrival of a few new “scent-sational” Animal Ambassador friends that are sure to be a big hit with kids and families alike.”

The Aviary is closed on Tuesdays now through March.
