First Peregrine falcon egg laid atop Cathedral of Learning

The first Peregrine falcon egg of the season has been laid atop the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning.

The National Aviary on the North Side says Carla laid the egg just before 1:20 p.m. on Sunday.

The Aviary says it’s the first of potentially four eggs Carla will lay with the potential of an egg being laid every 48 hours until she is done.

Both Carla and her partner Ecco will incubate the eggs once they are all laid, with Carla handing most of the nesting.

The Aviary adds that the eggs will remain uncovered until they are all laid, an will remain safe during that time.

It will “take a little over a month” for the eggs to start to hatch.

The Falcons are on the southeast side, at the top of the Cathedral.
