Virtual Reality Operator

A Virtual Reality Operator (VRO) is a front-line attendant to National Aviary’s flight simulation experience, Birdly. The VRO guides guests onto/off the machine and through the Birdly experience, helping guests to have a safe and enjoyable flight. 

This position is ongoing but may be served for a short term to earn needed service hours.

Days needed: Saturday, Sunday, holidays or other peak days when National Aviary is open

Number of Hours needed: 32 hours minimum per school semester

Specific Time/Shift Requirements: 1:00 - 5:00 pm, weekends and holidays. Occasional other hours available. 

Volunteer responsibilities:

  • Operate Birdly, the National Aviary’s flight simulation experience.
  • Complete on-the-job training..
  • Commit to a schedule one month in advance.
  • May serve as a short term volunteer assignment to accumulate service hours. 


  • Be at least 15 years old.
  • Submit an online application.
  • Participate in a 20-30 minute interview.
  • Be comfortable with technology and interacting with people of all ages. 
  • Have reliable and convenient internet access.
  • Commit to a minimum of 32 hours.
