World Penguin Day

April 25

National Aviary

We are open late, until 7 pm in honor of World Penguin Day. Join us as we celebrate African Penguins, a critically endangered species. Roughly 186 million people visit zoos and aquariums ever year, supporting the important work zoos, like the National Aviary, are doing to save species from extinction. Together we CAN make a difference!

Join us for fun activities throughout the day, included with admission!

  • Build a Penguin Nest: 11 am - 12 pm
  • Penguin Encounter: 11 am ($40 per person)
  • Penguin Toss Game: 12 pm - 1 pm
  • Penguin Feeding: 1 pm and 4 pm

  • Cast your vote for what we will name one of our penguins! This exciting contest runs from April 25 - May 20. Vote via a donation, or earn penguin tokens (worth a penny each) when you attend special penguin activities. Which name will you choose?
Sphen: Short for Spheniscus demersus, the scientific name for African Penguins
Rocky: African Penguins are warm weather penguins that reside along the rocky coastline of South Africa.
Archie:  National Aviary is located at Arch Street in Pittsburgh’s Historic North Side neighborhood!

Arch Street is under construction, but traffic is open to National Aviary visitors. Please drive with caution as you make your way to see our colony of African Penguins!
