Outdoor Art

Location: National Aviary

Length: 90 minutes

Cost: $15 per person, includes a unique National Aviary patch

Take a trip around the National Aviary and beyond to learn about the beauty and importance of birds and nature in art. With ample inspiration from a guided tour of the National Aviary and Allegheny Commons park, scouts will create their own nature-inspired masterpieces and even get an up-close look at art created by our bird artists.

Conservation Careers

Location: National Aviary

Length: 90 minutes

Cost: $15 per person, includes a unique National Aviary patch

Discover what it’s like to work in a zoo as a veterinarian, zoo keeper, or conservation biologist. Scouts will tour our habitats and learn how the National Aviary staff work together to help save birds and protect their habitats around the world. They will even get to participate in a hands on activity related to their field of exploration!

From the frigid arctic to dry deserts, birds can be found in nearly every habitat on Earth. Scouts will venture into the National Aviary’s immersive habitats to explore how birds adapt to their natural environments and learn how we create habitats that help our birds thrive. Scouts will learn how to make habitats for native wildlife in their own communities, and will even make a bird feeder to take home.

  • Have 3 dates in mind in case your preferred date is unavailable.
  • Use our online form to begin your reservation process. Or contact the National Aviary’s Education Groups Coordinator at 412-258-9439. Registration is required at least 3 weeks in advance.
  • Upon selection of your date, you will be emailed an education group contract.
  • Your reservation is final only after the National Aviary’s receipt of your signed contract and your non-refundable deposit.

Scout Events:

Scouts Only Owl Prowl

Saturday, September 28 & Thursday, November 7 | 7 PM – 8:30 PM

Cost: $10 per person

Take a night hike with National Aviary ornithologist, Bob Mulvihill in this guided, after-dark nature walk to look and listen for owls in Pittsburgh’s Frick Park! Bob will bring a calling device to coax owls closer as he leads the group through the wooded paths of Frick Park. Scouts will learn about the different owl species that can be found in Pittsburgh and their unique adaptations to nocturnal life!

Both programs will begin promptly at 7:00 pm and last until 8:30 pm. This program will begin and end at the Environmental Center in Frick Park. Participants should bring a flashlight, dress for the weather, and wear good walking shoes or boots for this exciting night-time event. This program is great for ages 7 and up!

Girl Scouts Take Flight

Saturday, October 12: All Scouts Welcome!

Check-in from 10:00AM-12:00PM

Bring your Girl Scout "flock" to experience the National Aviary through hands-on activities and up-close animal encounters that help girls work toward art and animal badges. Girls will meet our bird experts, investigate how to keep pet birds happy and healthy at home, and learn about ornithological research and bird conservation around the world.
