National Aviary Expands its Holiday Offerings for Children and Adults


New Holiday Lights and Extended Evening Hours with Holiday Music Performances and Café Offerings, plus Photos and Brunch with Santa, Holiday Penguin Camps and more


(PITTSBURGH) –November 1, 2018 --   Make lasting memories with your family this holiday season at the National Aviary, where visitors will encounter beautiful new indoor and outdoor light displays and festive décor throughout the hallways, grounds and gardens as they enjoy getting up close with 500 birds representing 150 species from around the world.

Special holiday events include photos with Santa and his penguin helper, a holiday brunch with Santa, and Penguin Camp -- a wonderful opportunity for fun and learning over the holiday break.  The National Aviary will offer extended evening hours including a festive menu, hot chocolate, cider and adult beverages, and live holiday music performances, Thursdays, December 13, and 20. Extended hours are also offered December 26-28.

The National Aviary will also, for the first time, feature light displays on its building and habitats.  Illuminated snowflakes will stand out among festoons of lights and wreaths. Also new this year:  a decorative, oversize Santa chair in the Atrium and a larger than life, lighted penguin family in Penguin Point, both perfect for taking memorable family photos.

National Aviary Holiday Events Schedule:

  • Open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays December 13 and 20, and Dec 26, 27, and 28

The National Aviary will be swathed in the glow of sparkling outdoor and indoor holiday lights, along with lighted trees and wreaths. Bring the whole family to enjoy the displays while strolling the hallways and habitats, and enjoying up-close interaction with more than 500 birds. On Thursdays December 13 and 20, during extended hours from 5 – 9 p.m., enjoy holiday music performances, take advantage of a 10% off discount in our gift shop (20% for members), purchase a light meal from the café featuring holiday favorites, and adult beverages for the grownups. Bring your family, friends or colleagues and relax in the beauty of the National Aviary festively decorated for the holidays. All exhibits will be open and lit for the evening, and the National Aviary gift shops will be freshly stocked with nature-themed gifts, including locally hand-crafted items, yard décor, birding guide books and supplies, plush toys, stationery and holiday cards, jewelry, adult coloring books, serving ware and many other truly unique items for nature lovers.

Bring your wish list and a camera... Santa and his penguin helpers are coming to the National Aviary! Visitors will have the opportunity to bring their cameras and take photos with Santa and one of the National Aviary’s African Penguins.

Brunch with Santa

  • Sunday, December 9
  • Two Seatings: 10:30 am and 12:30 pm
  • $37 (non-members adult), $19.50 (non-member child 4-10); $32 (member adult) $17 (member child 4-10 ); Children 3 and under are Free

Enjoy special holiday brunch with Santa! Reservations include general admission to all of the National Aviary's exhibits, a special bird appearance, a children's craft kit, and photos with Santa and a penguin. Cost includes admission to the National Aviary.

Holiday Camps

  • Available for ages 6-8 on Thursday, December 27, and ages 9-12 on Friday, December 28

Step away from the screens and spend your school holidays with the African Penguins. Holiday camps are a great way to stay active during the school break, learn something new, and have fun with feathered friends. Help prepare breakfast for the National Aviary’s colony of penguins, attend a private feeding, and learn what makes these endangered birds so special.
