General Summary:

The Human Resource Generalist assists in managing the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources office. The Human Resource Generalist carries out responsibilities in the following functional areas: recruiting, human resource information systems, benefits, compensation, HR compliance, policies and procedures, and employment.

The Human Resources Generalist is responsible in all or in part of these areas:

  • recruiting and staffing logistics;
  • employment and compliance to regulatory concerns and reporting;
  • policy development and documentation;
  • compensation and benefits administration;
  • maintaining employee files;
  • employee safety, welfare, wellness and health; and
  • employee services and counseling.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administers various human resource plans and procedures for all National Aviary personnel; assists in the development and implementation of all personnel policies and procedures ensuring compliance with federal, state and local employment and benefits laws and regulations.
  • Responsible for overall benefits administration for staff, including but not limited to, communicating and administering benefits information, maintaining all benefit records,  reviewing insurance invoices for accuracy, claims resolution, change reporting, and approving invoices for payment.
  • Responsible for maintaining compliance with federal, state employment and benefits laws and regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining paperwork for unemployment claims, short-term disability, long-term disability, FMLA, and COBRA.
  • Assists Director of OD/HR and CFO in reviewing and negotiating insurance benefits with third parties.  Works to obtain the best insurance plans for employees at the best cost to the Aviary.
  • Responsible for recruiting, carrying out employee hiring and termination policies and practices and for new employee orientation.  Enforces compliance in hiring practices and procedures, and maintaining postings required by Federal and State laws.
  • Responsible for all phases of recruiting process, including but not limited to, writing and posting job advertisements, performing all necessary background checks in a timely manner to ensure new and prospective employees have been approved for hire, checking references, and following best hiring practices including ensuring multiple levels of interviews, and onboarding.
  • Assists Director of OD/HR in conducting exit interviews
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining all new hire and termination paperwork.
  • Assists the Facilities Support Manager in administering the security/key card system as well as tracking keys for all employees.
  • Responsible for overall management of all personnel systems. Responsible for ensuring all personnel records and systems are up-to-date at all times, including but not limited to, conflict of interest forms, performance evaluation forms, and pay authorization forms 
  • Participates as an active member on the Aviary’s Safety Committee; prioritizes safety and security issues.
  • Responsible for maintaining injury and accident reports, enforcing their usage and completeness, and filing and monitoring of workers compensation claims.  Responsible for filing regulatory reports and for maintaining safety records. 
  • Assists in organizing first aid training, safety training, harassment training and all other staff training to maintain the highest standards in staff and visitor safety.
  • Responsible for oversight of AED machine, ensuring it is in working order at all times.
  • Assists Director of OD/HR in coordinating all HR staff meetings and staff functions.
  • Promotes positive attitude and influence to enhance productivity and a pleasant work environment, exhibits willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done.  
  • Participates in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.
  • Assists in evaluation of reports, decisions and results of department in relation to established goals. Recommends new approaches, policies and procedures to improve efficiency of the department and services performed.
  • Exhibit integrity and dependability through behaviors and actions; maintain confidentiality in all staff interactions.
  • Continue to develop professionally and staying abreast of industry trends related to HR by participating in conferences and educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations.
  • Responsible for all other human resource tasks, as assigned, by the Director of OD/HR.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related field and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in overall human resources functions
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification or ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire date
  • Non-profit experience preferred 
  • Excellent organizational skills required
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills required
  • Working knowledge of human resource processes and procedures
  • Knowledge of personnel practices and principles
  • Knowledge of various computer programs such as excel, word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work

Must be able to pass a Criminal Background Investigation, a PA Child Abuse Investigation and an FBI Fingerprinting Investigation.
