Citizen science is real science that takes advantage of the interest and ability of large numbers of people to make accurate observations of nature (i.e., data), right in their own backyard or other designated area.  With specific instructions on what to look for, what information to collect, and how to record and submit the information, people who are not scientists can nonetheless contribute significantly to scientific studies of birds and many other things, too.  Some citizen science projects that many people have heard of include are the Christmas Bird Count and the Great Backyard Bird Count, but there are many more!  At the National Aviary, we invite people to help with studies of nesting backyard bird, migrating owls, and wintering hummingbirds.  The only qualification to be a citizen scientist is your own curiosity!
