Owls are one of the most recognizable birds on earth, yet they remain elusive to many because of their behaviors.  Students encounter live owls from around the world and discover the adaptations that make them successful hunters, day and night!

I Want To Be a Vet

Students explore the exciting wolrd of veterinary medicine and learn what it's like to work in a bird hospital. Playing the role of vet, students care for "plush" patients, making diagnoses and planning treatment. Live patients will be on hand to tell their own stories of medical care and healing.

Penguins are Cool

Students discover all 18 species of penguin through a PowerPoint journey across the globe, and learn how these unique, flightless birds survive in their worlds.  Our African penguins take center stage to showcase special adaptations and behaviors.

NEW! Rainforest

Discover rainforests through the eyes of its birds. Home to nearly half of the world’s plant and animal species, students examine how rainforests support ecological balance as well as global economies, and why it is important for us to conserve this valuable natural resource. The slide show presentation is followed up by an up-close encounter with a live bird representing the rainforest community. A visit to our new Tropical Rainforest habitat is the perfect complement to this fascinating program!

NEW! Science and Animal Behavior

How do we know where birds migrate in the winter? Or what different bird sounds and behaviors mean? Or how long a species lives in the wild? Scientists learn answers to these questions and more by following the scientific method while making direct observations in the wild. In this new educational program, students will implement the same methods and data collection techniques that ornithologists use by watching the residents of the National Aviary’s free flight exhibits and completing ethograms. A combination of classroom activities and independent observation work encourages students to think like scientists.
