Vivien Meets her Fans!

Our baby sloth Vivien has fans from all over! Vivien recently met Meghan from New Jersey during an interactive encounter - and got some gifts! We love seeing guests make an unforgettable connection at the National Aviary.

Vivien Has a New Favorite Food

Vivien has a new favorite food! Our baby two-toed sloth recently started eating lettuce and she loves it! Sloths are known for being slow, even when it comes to digestion: it could take her up to a month to digest this meal! Sloths have a slow digestive system with a four-chambered stomach, much like a cow.

Vivien Likes Apples!

Yum! One of Vivien's favorite foods is now apple! As she grows older, she's being introduced to lots of yummy new snacks like green beans and zucchini! Stay tuned to find out her next favorite meal.

Nap Time!

Awww! Watch Vivien snuggle up for a nap. Two-toed sloths like Vivien can sleep 15 to 20 hours a day.

Happy Half-Birthday, Vivien!

Vivien turned 6 months old on February 21, 2018! It takes Two-toed sloths two years to reach their full size of 10-20 pounds. Vivien weighs about 3 pounds today!

Vivien Tries New Food

Vivien, our baby two-toed sloth, is being introduced to new foods as she grows to ensure she has a balanced diet. She loves to eat yummy sweet potatoes and rice, and she just tried her first bite of apple!

Get to know Vivien:

  • Vivien was born on August 21, 2017!
  • Vivien is named after actress Vivien Leigh. Vivien Leigh and Rudolph Valentino were classic film stars of the 20s and 30s.
  • She weighed 1.97 pounds when she arrived at the National Aviary! In January 2018, she measured about 14.5 inches and weighed about 2.5 pounds. When full grown, she will weigh between 10 and 20 pounds.
  • Vivien eats a diet of rice and sweet potatoes, which she loves! When she's older, she will eat more foods like apple, zucchini, rice, carrots, and green beans.
  • Vivien is a curious and adventurous sloth - she loves to explore her habitat and started hanging upside down when she was about 20 days old.

Why does the National Aviary have sloths?

The National Aviary is currently home to two male sloths, Wookiee and Valentino, in addition to Vivien. The National Aviary features birds from around the world but also other animals that share their ecosystems. Given their arboreal lifestyle, sloths are the perfect addition to the National Aviary.

This baby sloth is an ambassador for her species and the birds that live in the rainforests of Central and South America, areas that are experiencing habitat destruction as a result of human population growth.

When Valentino came to the National Aviary in 2016, his popularity was unprecedented! He has helped us to share conservation messages with so many people! In fact, he is so popular that we decided to welcome another sloth ambassador to the National Aviary family. We hope that one day, Vivien and Valentino will become parents to new sloths born at the National Aviary.
