Why does the National Aviary have sloths?

The National Aviary is currently home to two male sloths, Wookiee and Valentino, in addition to Vivien. The National Aviary features birds from around the world but also other animals that share their ecosystems. Given their arboreal lifestyle, sloths are the perfect addition to the National Aviary.

This baby sloth is an ambassador for her species and the birds that live in the rainforests of Central and South America, areas that are experiencing habitat destruction as a result of human population growth.

When Valentino came to the National Aviary in 2016, his popularity was unprecedented! He has helped us to share conservation messages with so many people! In fact, he is so popular that we decided to welcome another sloth ambassador to the National Aviary family. We hope that one day, Vivien and Valentino will become parents to new sloths born at the National Aviary.
