Distribution

Breeds in SE Siberia, NE China and N Korea

Habitat

Well-forested, undisturbed and unpolluted fast-flowing rivers and streams in mountainous areas

Diet

small fish and aquatic invertebrates

Breeding

Nests in tree hollows 5-40 feet above ground, typically along the riverbank. Will also use nestboxes. Clutch usually 10–11 eggs; incubation period is about 32 days.
