Feeds mostly by diving from surface, scanning for food first with head immersed; can dive to depths of 15 feet for up to 45 seconds!

Distribution

Scandanavia to E. Siberia

Habitat

Freshwater lakes, pools, slow-flowing rivers and muskegs in taiga zone.

Diet

Aquatic invertebrates, mainly insects and their larvae; also some fish and amphibians

Breeding

Nests in tree hollows, including old woodpecker cavities and nest boxes up to 30 feet above ground; nest is lined with feathers and down (but usually no other material). Lays 7–9 cream to pale buff eggs which are incubated for four weeks.
