The Visitor Services Associate assists with all visitor service operations, which includes the Retail Shop and Admissions. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate admissions and retail records, safeguarding cash, promoting walk-in membership sales and the sales of in-house encounters and programs.


  • Greets guests and completes the check-in process.
  • Utilizes the Visitor Services’ Five Steps for Admission and other tools in order to maintain high standards of customer service
  • Utilizes the Point-of-Sale system efficiently for admission, merchandising, and scheduling.
  • Directs school and party groups.
  • Promotes and sells memberships, brunch, all classes and education programs.
  • Prices merchandise and accurately maintain and replace stock sold from display.
  • Assists management in receiving and ticketing new merchandise.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of all retail and admissions operations. Continually maintains the gift shop merchandise so all products are straightened and neat.
  • Communicates with other departments to ensure accurate scheduling and staffing.
  • Understands the National Aviary’s history and is equipped to share interesting facts about our birds.
  • Assists in outside telephone call coordination, answering general guest questions and direct calls to appropriate individuals.
  • Adheres to all established protocols and procedures
  • Interacts with visitors utilizing National Aviary Visitor Engagement protocol

* Upon successful completion of the 90 day introductory and if the associate is determined to be eligible, he or she will proceed to the next level of training:

  • Accurately enters purchase orders into the Point of Sale system following all protocols and policies.
  • Cross references purchase orders against the confirmation received. Checks for accuracy and any inconsistencies.
  • Tickets, distributes, and displays new merchandise in the gift shops, following all protocols and policies.

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Experience with Point-of-Sale system preferred.


  • Satisfactory Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse History Certification
  • Satisfactory FBI Criminal Record Check


While performing the duties of this job, the employee constantly operates a computer and phone and regularly moves about the office to access fixtures, file cabinets, office equipment, etc. The employee occasionally will use a stepladder and other tools to access merchandise. The employee occasionally lifts boxes up to 25 pounds across the facility.


Work environments will include climate-controlled office spaces, public areas where the noise level may be loud, and occasionally outdoors where work may need to be done in inclement weather conditions, including extremes of temperature and precipitation.


This is a part-time position that is generally scheduled for 20-29 hours of work each week. The candidate must have a flexible schedule and be able to work on weekdays, weekends, holidays, and occasionally in the evening as job duties demand.
