Summer Camp Educator, Seasonal, Full Time

The National Aviary is currently seeking to fill a Seasonal Summer Camp Educator position from May 15 through September 3, 2019. Seasonal Educators work under the direct supervision of the Education Manager and Curator of Behavioral Management and Education and in close collaboration with the Education Specialist. 

 

The Seasonal Educator is part of a dynamic and energetic animal programs department performing all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects the National Aviary’s mission to inspire a respect for nature through an appreciation of birds. Working closely with the organization’s Education Specialist, the Seasonal Educator co-coordinates and co-facilitates summer camps for preschoolers, school-aged children and teens; helps develops and prepares camp activities and lessons; assists with pre-program communications and camp administration.  The Seasonal Educator also teaches other education classes, tours and experiences. Seasonal Educators work Monday-Friday, typically from 8:00 am—4:00 pm.

 

The Seasonal Educator works in a high-paced environment. Due to the nature of the work, applicants must meet the following requirements:

 

·         Undergraduate degree in Environmental Education, Education, Zoological Sciences or related fields

·         Previous experience in a formal classroom or informal learning center (zoo, nature center, museum, or similar).  Coordinating or facilitating summer camp programming a plus.

·         Strong teaching, interpretation and presentation skills

·         Strong communication and hospitality skills, with the ability to interact with a variety of audiences, ages, and abilities in a professional and productive manner

·         Strong group management skills, with the ability to maintain focused attention and address audience needs proactively

·         Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead a team

·         Ability to organize and complete projects in a timely manner

·         Ability to work indoors and outdoors

·         Ability to perform heavy physical labor such as lifting up to 50 lbs., reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling

·         Proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office products a plus

·         Previous experience in bird handling a plus

 

The successful candidate must be able to pass all three of our background investigations including FBI fingerprinting for Criminal Background, PA Child Abuse Clearance, and PA State Police Criminal Background Investigation. A valid PA Driver’s License is desired.
