National Aviary Senior Aviculturist Chris Gaus and Education Trainer Jamie Travitz are in Cape Town, South Africa to learn about African Penguins! Between October 30 and November 13, 2016, they will be learning from and working alongside the dedicated staff of SANCCOB, the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds.

Chris will be working with SANCCOB’s Chick Bolstering Project, helping to hand raise abandoned baby penguins, while Jamie works with SANCCOB’s education team to make environmental education more accessible to learners with special education needs.

The National Aviary and SANCCOB are working to bring African Penguins back from the brink of extinction. Through invaluable opportunities like this one, our two teams can make further strides in penguin conservation by learning from each other.
