Greetings to our electronic visitors! You join over 105,000 people who visit In person our Pittsburgh North Shore venue.
Interactivity is at the core of all that the National Aviary undertakes. Every visitor has multiple opportunities to be up-close and personal with some of nature’s most remarkable creatures of the feathered kind. Over 600 birds representing more than 200 species reside at the National Aviary.
From some of nature’s most endangered birds to the common songbirds that populate your backyard, birds of all varieties delight our guests. Intermittently, throughout the day, visitors can feed the birds in the Tropical Forest and Wetlands, which, of course, makes the visitors extra popular with these avian inhabitants.
Highly-skilled trainers and keepers are positioned throughout the facility to answer visitors’ questions and to provide background on each of the exhibits. At hourly intervals, compelling interactive experiences are available to expand guests’ understanding of specific birds, their habitat and their natural behavior.
In the summer, visitors enjoy our incredible outdoor bird show, where birds from all over the world swoop over visitor’s heads and exhibit all of the special gifts that nature gave to them. During winter months, reduced versions of this show occur in the Aviary’s atrium.
A wide variety of Trainer Talks compliment the bird show in the atrium and provide guests special insights to specific birds. And, for visitors who make advance arrangements, an encounter with a penguin tops off their experience.
Individuals of all ages and backgrounds find something that awakens their interest in the natural world at the National Aviary. Please stop by to visit any time. We are open every day but Christmas from 9am until 5pm. Our feathered friends and our talented staff look forward to serving you.
