Get Winged!FliteZone moves inside for a new show!
Wednesday – Sunday beginning October 11, through mid-May 2009
11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
An elite group of the National Aviary’s most intrepid fliers has completed indoor flight training and are appearing in a brand new free-flight bird show in the National Aviary Atrium. New birds in the cast include blue-fronted amazon parrots Lucky, Snoopy and Woodstock; Piper, the trumpeter hornbill; Talon, an augur buzzard; African penguins; Robin, a hooded vulture; flamingos, parrots, and Minnie, a feisty American crow considered the most clever of the lot. Several silver gulls will also make an appearance.
“This fall and winter, FliteZone will focus on the natural behaviors of these amazing and very different birds as well as their adaptations for hunting and gathering food in the wild,” says Steve Sarro, Director of Animal Programs at the National Aviary. “The show offers guests some wonderful new experiences with birds that have previously only been seen in an exhibit setting. We expect that our baby flamingos will be a hit, as will Piper, who will interact with guests by catching food in mid-air. The raptors add a tremendous thrill factor to the show when they fly just inches over the heads of the audience.”
These breath-taking brushes with birds rarely seen in flight will be enhanced by an educational component that informs audiences about the behaviors of the birds and their survival status in the wild. Visitors will also have the opportunity to contribute to the conservation and protection of African penguins in the wild.
Bring a camera, take a seat, and prepare for some incredible fly-bys!
