School Field Trips

Bring your students to the National Aviary for an unforgettable learning experience!

Our 2014-2015 school programs assist students to understand important conservation and environmental concepts through engaging studies of birds from across the globe!  Age-appropriate and standards-based, programs include an interactive presentation of your choice, live bird encounter, exhibit tour, and general admission (preschool programs do not include the exhibit tour).  You can add-on one or more of our Helen M. Schmidt FliteZone™ Theater Shows, an Owl Pellet dissection lab, or both (additional fees apply).  Value packages are available, and group lunches can be ordered through Atria’s Kookaburra Kitchen, the National Aviary’s onsite cafe.

Field Trip Options (ages Pre-K to Grade 12):

Customize your field trip based on the amount of time you have for your visit, and your students’ interests.

3-hour Value Package: $10/person, Sept-Feb $11/person, Mar-Aug includes:

  • an interactive live bird program of your choice (click here for interactive program options)
  • activity-based guided tour of live bird exhibits
  • interactive feeding
  • show admission
  • general admission

2-hour Value Package $9/person, Sept-Feb $10/person, Mar-Aug includes:

General Admission option:

Schools may also pay general admission at the $10 per student group rate and customize your visit with the add-on experiences below, paid a la carte. You may also add an interactive live bird program for $4 per person.

Post-Secondary, Adult Education, and Lifelong Learning Classes 

Adult educational programs include a one-hour dynamic interactive presentation including live birds, plus general admission so you can explore the National Aviary on your own. Add-on experiences like guided tours are also available via our a la carte menu. $18 per person, year round.

Customize your experience with one or more of these exciting add-on experiences (additional fees apply)

Helen M. Schmidt FliteZone™ Theater Shows
The National Aviary’s birds show off their natural and trained behaviors during interactive, free-flying experiences, held indoors and lasting 20-30 minutes.  Shows vary by season; ask about our current shows when you register. One Show: $5 per person. Two shows (when available): $4 per person

Art or Photo Safari Session
You bring your cameras, charcoals, pastels, paints, sketch pads and students, and we’ll provide exclusive access to our birds not currently on exhibit. During this 1-hour add-on, our education trainers will present species for photography, sketching, or painting, telling each bird’s story of survival. $5 per person

Owl Pellets
Dissect owl pellets!  This 30-minute add-on program is best-suited to Amazing Adaptations, Owls, and Mythbusters, but can be added to any program. We provide all supplies, educational materials and instruction. $3 per person

Veterinary Experience Necropsy Lab
Don scrubs and gloves as you perform a necropsy like a veterinarian.  Students work together in teams on a real specimen, following the directions of our skilled instructors. Available for High School groups only. $7 per person

Planning your National Aviary Field Trip or Group Visit:

Group Size and Student-to-Chaperone Ratios:

For group visits and field trips to the National Aviary, minimum group size is 15 paying participants. The National Aviary requires 1 adult chaperone for every 5 students for preschool groups, and 10 students for all other grades.  These chaperones, plus the bus driver, receive complimentary admission.

Lunch Options

The National Aviary provides limited lunch spaces for your group, as availability permits, and if lunch space is requested at time of reservation.  In addition, hot or cold group lunches can be ordered directly through Atria’s Kookaburra Kitchen, the National Aviary’s onsite cafe

Bus Parking

Buses may drop off passengers at the National Aviary’s east entrance located on Arch Street with motor coach parking on Arch Street or Western Avenue. Cars and vans may park in the National Aviary lot; the parking fee is $5 per vehicle and subject to availability.
Hours of Operation: An indoor facility open 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

**Attention Bus Drivers/Operators: Please note this important bridge restriction near the National Aviary.**

Location: Within West Park on Pittsburgh’s historic North Side, a short drive from downtown. Easy access to major interstates including I-376, I-279 and Route 28.

Accessibility: Welcoming to persons with disabilities, in accordance with ADA guidelines.

Café: Purchase a catered package to complement your visit, or peruse a variety of snack and meal options at Kookaburra Café with seating in our glass domed atrium.

  2. Use our online form to begin your reservation process ( Or contact the National Aviary’s Education Groups Coordinator at 412-258-9439. You may also download and print the form by clicking here. Registration is required at least 3 weeks in advance.
  3. Upon selection of your date, you will be emailed an education group contract.
  4. Your reservation is final only after the National Aviary’s receipt of your signed contract and your non-refundable deposit.
