The National Aviary has a packed schedule of Summer Events. From lorikeet birthday parties to dove releases to visits from Dora & Diego, there’s an upcoming event that you won’t want to miss. Check out all the details on our website and read about some of the highlights below.
All events are FREE with admission unless otherwise noted.


Pittsburgh Penguins Day
Saturday, June 28, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Spend a day with your favorite penguins—the National Aviary’s African penguins! Stanley, Elvis, Patrick, and Simon will greet guests during a penguin parade at 12:30 p.m. Sidney, our newest penguin, will make appearances throughout the day and trainers will be on-hand to tell guests all about penguins. Visitors will also get to meet Iceburgh from noon to 1 p.m.
Visitors who wear Pittsburgh Penguins gear will receive $2 off admission.


Fourth of July!
Celebrate the Fourth of July with the National Aviary’s flock! Watch FliteZone and get nose-to-beak with your favorite feathery friends!


Adopt a Bald Eagle!
Celebrate Our Nation’s Birthday by Adopting an Eagle at the National Aviary

Individuals or families who purchase a bald eagle adoption package receive a personalized adoption certificate, photo of one of the Aviary's bald eagles, a species fact sheet and four passes to the National Aviary. Find out more about our Adopt-a-Bird program.

The Lories turn 1!
Saturday, July 26, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

It’s a birthday party for our rainbow lorikeets, the most colorful friends in our flock! We’ll be celebrating the first anniversary of the Lories & Friends exhibit with a party with Radio Disney!


Dora & Diego visit the National Aviary!
Saturday & Sunday, August 30 – 31, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Meet Dora the Explorer and her cousin Diego and have your photo taken with them! Bring your backpack and your rescue pack and look for stars in an interactive scavenger hunt (for children under 7). Vámonos!

Get Winged! The National Aviary’s free-flight summer bird show is back, featuring amazing flights and close encounters. During the show, you’ll get a chance to meet new feathery friends including Sidney, our newest African penguin.

Hey, Kids! Fly back through time with the National Aviary for our 2008 Dino-soars! Summer Camp. Get to know some of the amazing animals that share our world today and discover what life was like on our planet in ages past.

Little Peepers logoEvery Monday is Peepers Monday!
May 25 through August 25

Starting May 25th, Little Peepers, our popular story-time program, is moving to Mondays only at 10:30 a.m. and all summer long every Monday is Peepers Monday!

On Peepers Mondays, children under 6 receive FREE Admission to the National Aviary.


Two-fur-Tuesdays all Summer!
Through August 26

Wookiee, our spokes-sloth, invites you to visit him on Tuesdays during the summer, when we’ll be offering two-for-one admission… or if you ask Wookiee, two-“fur”-one!


Check out our brand new West Park Wildlife Walk – a bird-watching trek through West Park with one of the National Aviary’s trainers, daily at 10:30 a.m.
Also, don’t miss stopping by our Bird Hospital during the Vet Window and Meet-a-Patient programs. You’ll get a chance to see our veterinary staff perform basic procedures and meet some of the hospital’s patients, daily at noon.



August 9, 2008

The National Aviary’s carefree celebration of summer is back! On Saturday, August 9th join us for great food from some of Pittsburgh’s best restaurants, Penn Brewery beer, libations, and wonderful entertainment – all benefiting the National Aviary!

Tickets:
$50 General Admission
$100 VIP Admission- Includes a reception, valet parking, access to a private VIP area and bar, a bird encounter, and giveaways!

Valet Parking for the evening is available for $10 per car.


Hawk Mountain Weekend

October 11 and 12, 2008

Join the National Aviary on an exclusive trip to Hawk Mountain, widely regarded as one of the best sites in the eastern U.S. to watch birds of prey on migration! The trip also includes a visit to Powdermill Nature Reserve and its Avian Research Center. Don't miss this opportunity to view wild birds on migration with the experienced staff of the National Aviary and the experts at Hawk Mountain and Powdermill Nature Reserve!
The trip includes all transportation to and from Hawk Mountain and Powdermill, overnight accommodations, and breakfast and lunch for both days. Children over the age of 12 are welcome. Book your holiday party with im“peck”able style!

It’s not too early to plan your holiday party at the National Aviary, which offers a unique variation on the typical venue. Host intimate soirees under the indoor Victorian-inspired glass-domed atrium, where guests can mingle with the more than 200 species of birds on exhibit.
The National Aviary’s three exclusive catering partners, Big Catering of the Big Burrito Restaurant Group, Raina’s Catering and Opening Night Catering, all offer rental clients the highest quality and most diverse menu selections. The National Aviary Education Department is looking for a few used laptops.
The laptops only need to be able to handle basic Microsoft programs and will be used for our outreach and in-house classroom programs. Please contact Debbie West at 412-323-7235 x 209 for donation information.
