The Deepwater Horizon oil spill is threatening hundreds of species of birds that breed, winter and rest in the Gulf Coast area. The effects of this spill will impact birds directly in the path of the advancing slick, including herons, terns, skimmers, plovers, gulls, rails, and ducks. The impact to these and other fragile species depends on how long the leak lasts, weather conditions, and water currents.

The National Aviary is gathering information from a number of bird conservation organizations working to mount an organized volunteer response to what could be the greatest environmental disaster in our history. If you would like to support rescue efforts, please consider making a donation to the Gulf Coast Avian Rescue Effort.
