Our next Animal Programs/Docent/Aviary Ambassador
Volunteer Staff Orientation is scheduled for:

If accepted into the program, you will be required to attend a training lab from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday February 7, 2009 at the National Aviary.

There are opportunities to learn about husbandry, training and education, as the Animal Programs Department encompasses all of these areas.

Qualified volunteers can choose to participate as Animal Programs Volunteers or as Docents or Aviary Ambassadors.


Requirements for Animal Programs Volunteers

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old

Volunteers must attend orientation and interview

Acceptance into the program is based on interviews, availability, and compatibility of interests

Volunteers must attend 12 yearly meetings. Meetings are held on the first Saturday of each month from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.

Volunteers must commit to 280 hours of service per year. This equals volunteering one 8-hour day each week for 35 weeks each year

The Aviary is currently accepting only weekday volunteers for these positions

Docents are our front line! They greet guests, interpret at exhibits, give tours, assist with education programs and outreaches, and assist during interactive experiences.

Docents must be at least 18 years old

Docents must attend orientation and interview

Acceptance into the program is based on interviews, availability, and compatibility of interests

Docents must attend 12 yearly meetings. Meetings are held on the first Saturday of each month from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.

Docents must commit to 140 hours of service per year. This equals volunteering one 4-hour day each week for 35 weeks each year

The Aviary is currently accepting docents for any day of the week



Requirements for Aviary Ambassadors
Aviary Ambassadors are people who love the Aviary and would like to help out by assisting with special events, promotional outreaches, and special projects.

Ambassadors must be at least 18 years old

Ambassadors must attend orientation and interview

Acceptance into the program is based on interviews, availability, and compatibility of interests

Ambassadors must commit to 20 hours of service per year
