This region is mainly tropical or subtopical, with annual rainfall.


Only two of the 66 families of breeding birds are endemic: leafbirds and fairy bluebirds. Species include pheasants, pigeons, woodpeckers, pitas, barbets and honey guides, and sunbirds. Some species, such as megapodes, frogmouths, woodswallows, flowerpeckers, lories and cockatoos, are shared with the Australasian region.
