Adopt-A-Bird
African Penguin     (Spheniscus demersus)

FUN FACT
During moult season they lose almost half of their body weight. At the end of the moult they return to the sea and spend about 6 weeks fattening up again.

They are about two feet tall and weigh 6.8 to 8 pounds. Penguins are birds that cannot fly, but swim very well and spend most of its life at sea. The African Penguin swims at a speed of about 4-15 miles per hour, but are prey for gulls, ibis, octopus and sharks.
This species is vulnerable due to over-fishing of their food supply, pollution from oil tankers and removal of nesting sites being used for fertilizer.
