Spectacled Owl     (Pulsatrix perpicillata)


FUN FACT
* Franklin was named for Benjamin Franklin, the inventor of modern eyeglasses (spectacles).
* Their nickname is "crab owl" because they like to catch and eat crabs.

  The Spectacled Owl is a large, tropical wood owl known for its distinctive facial markings that give it a spectacled appearance. The dark brown owl is a approximately 460 mm long with a short tail. It bears a white patch on its throat with a dark brown belt around the neck and a light yellowish breast.





 
DISTRIBUTION
Central and South American from Mexico to Argentina

HABITAT
Dense tropical forests

DIET
Rodents, bats, birds, crabs, and insects

BREEDING
2-3 white eggs are laid in a nest in tree cavity. The incubation period is 35 days and usually only 1 chick survives. Young leave the nest by 6 weeks but can remain with the parents for up to a year.
