Out of the 64 families breeding here, there are 15 endemic species: cassowaries, kiwis, Emu, New Zealand wattlebirds, owlet-nightjars, magpie-larks, Australian mud-nesters, bell magpies, bowerbirds and birds of paradise.


Other species are predominantly Australasian, including the honeyeaters, megapodes and Australasian warblers. Flamingos, Old World vultures, pheasants, woodpeckers and finches are found in other Old World regions but absent from Australasia.
