In this region, large areas receive relatively little rain. Consequently, it is made up prominently of desert, grassland and savanna habitats. Seventy-three families breed in the region; seven are endemic.


There many terrestrial and seed-eating birds and relatively few waterbirds. Species include Ostrich, turacos, Hammerkop, Secretary Bird, mousebirds, woodhoopoes, helmet shrikes, guineafowl, weavers and starlings.
