FACT SHEET - Sky Deck
PITTSBURGH – May 19, 2010
Located on the roof of the Helen M. Schmidt FliteZoneTM Theater, the Sky Deck will allow visitors a breathtaking, up-close entree into the world of raptors. With open sky as a backdrop, guests will witness birds of prey flying at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour at eye-level in pursuit of prey tossed as lures. Visitors will enter the airy realm of kestrels, falcons, black kites and hawks, sharing the birds’ space and watching as the birds swoop and dive for food, circle to the trees in the park, and return to the gloves of trainers standing alongside audience members.
The Helen M. Schmidt FliteZoneTM Theater and Sky Deck space are part of a multiphase, multiyear expansion of the National Aviary. Architectural renovations and additions, including major new façades, have been designed by SPRINGBOARD Architecture Communication Design LLC.
