FACT SHEET - National Aviary Expansion and Renovation

PITTSBURGH – May 19, 2010

Architectural renovations and expansion by SPRINGBOARD Architecture Communication Design LLC


Scope of project to be completed Fall 2010 includes:
• Helen M. Schmidt FliteZoneTM Theater
• Creation of new facades and additional Arch Street entrance
• Café with indoor and outdoor seating
• Open-air rooftop Sky Deck for raptor demonstrations and special events
• New education classroom

New Grasslands exhibit (opened March 2010)
Design highlights:

• Designed to achieve LEED certification
• Project will set new architectural standard for bird-friendly design; extensive use of fritted glass will eliminate wild bird strikes on window exteriors

Renovation highlights:
• Updated HVAC systems
• Renovated restrooms
• New floors in Atrium and main hallway
• Addition of skylights to Parrots of the World exhibit
