National Aviary Flock Featured in BIRD

PITTSBURGH – November 30, 2009

A select group of the National Aviary’s birds are starring in the recently released book Bird, by photographer and filmmaker Andrew Zuckerman.

Bird is the sequel to Zuckerman’s runaway success Creature. In this new book, he turns his lens to winged creatures, shooting them against a stark white background to allow the complexity of color and texture to shine. Containing more than 200 photographs of nearly 75 species, each bird is depicted with rare insight, humor and wonder.

Bird is delightful and thought provoking, offering a glimpse of the most flighty members of the animal kingdom. Like Creature, this book is perfect for animal lovers, ornithologists, photography fans, and anyone interested in the natural world.

Among the National Aviary’s birds featured in the book are African penguins, scarlet macaw, Eurasian eagle owl, American kestrel, green aracari, military macaw, call duck, spectacled owl, hyacinth macaw and a blue-fronted Amazon parrot.

Approximately half the birds in the book were photographed at the Aviary last fall. The birds were photographed during a multi-day shoot that involved a team of Aviary trainers.

Bird is available at the National Aviary gift shop and at area bookstores, and lists at $60. Footage of the making of the book can be viewed at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMhtAIHybnY
